FENN SPORTS REPORT FOR MAY 18, 2017

VARSITY BASEBALL

Fenn’s varsity baseball team has run into some tougher competition of late than it saw early in the season.  The result was a three-game win streak making a u-turn into a two-game losing skid, and a powerhouse offense being quieted.  Up against St. John’s Prep at home on May 12, Fenn gave up a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, then surrendered another run in the fifth to trail, 3-0.  Fenn’s only run came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Ben Platt connected for an RBI.  Overall, Fenn picked up six hits in the 3-1 loss to St. John’s Prep.  Nate Crozier notched two of those hits.  Eoin Morrissey threw five strikeouts in five innings on the mound.  Nico Martinez pitched two innings, registering three strikeouts.

Fenn got back on track on May 17, re-igniting its offense in an 11-0 win at Fay School in Southborough.  Fenn’s eleven runs came off of just five hits, with Will Dean picking up a pair of hits to lead the charge.  Dean knocked in three runs, while Ben Carbeau and Nico Martinez each had three RBI.  Holding a 1-0 advantage after one inning, Fenn added three runs in the third and blew it wide open in the fourth with six more runs.  Stuart McCallum went four innings on the mound and had two strikeouts.  Fenn handled Fay easily in both meetings of the season, outscoring the boys from Southborough, 30-2, in the two victories.

Fenn varsity baseball is 4-2-1 on the season.

VARSITY LACROSSE

Fenn’s varsity lacrosse team lost a tough game against a highly skilled Boston College High School team, 4-3, on May 12.  Fenn’s tremendous team defense came the game close, with great individual efforts from their captains, senior defenseman Riley Gustafson and senior goalie Henry Peters.  Peters showcased some beautiful saves in net.  Eighth grade defensemen Peter Bazos also played very well against a strong attack.

“Despite the loss, we were proud of the boys efforts,” said coach Matt Ward.  “Especially given we lost to BC High by six goals earlier this season and this time we were missing one of our best offensive players, attack man Peter Cook.”

The sun came out on May 17 for Fenn, as the blue-and-gold hosted St. John’s Prep at Reynolds Field.   Fenn survived the blistering 90-degree temps and outscored St. John’s Prep, 9-4.  The win evens Fenn’s record at 4-4 this season.

JV TENNIS

Strong results in doubles play boosted Fenn’s JV Tennis team past Shady Hill School’s competitive co-ed middle school squad, 6-3, on May 8 in Concord.  Matt Nicholas and Adam Ewing won two matches each for Fenn, teaming for a 6-4 doubles victory after claiming their separate leadoff sets, Ewing at #4 Singles (6-1) and Nicholas at #1 Doubles with Tim Hibben (6-2).  Nathan Lang and Alex Brady earned a 6-1 result at #2 Doubles, and Miles Berry punched out a solid 6-2 scorecard at #1 Singles, relying on steady groundstrokes to maneuver his opponent from alley to alley.  A tense tiebreaker at #3 Doubles closed the afternoon on Annursnac Hill, with Ethan Mullen and Charlie Groome battling to a 7-4 edge in their decisive thirteenth game to preserve their undefeated record this spring.

On May 10 in Maynard, Miles Berry’s strong set at #1 Singles enabled Fenn’s JV Tennis team to salvage a 4-4 draw against shorthanded Rivers School.  The visitors from Weston slotted their top four boys into both singles and doubles to fill the lineup, and they built a 3-1 advantage in the opening flight of doubles matches.  Subsequent singles play restored the balance for Fenn, with Tim Hibben blasting through a 6-0 set at #4 and Wes Kleiman overcoming some early unforced errors to knock out a 6-3 win at #3.  That left Berry on the court against Rivers’ hard-serving top gun, and he mixed reliable baseline shots with a handful of well-placed volleys to earn a 6-4 victory.

Fenn’s boys dropped a 5-3 decision on Fay School’s handsome Harlow Courts in Southborough on May 17.  In the first truly hot conditions of the spring season, four of the matches were rather lopsided while the others were quite tightly contested, so the final tally hinged on a handful of tentative groundstrokes and unforced errors in a handful of games.  Winners for Fenn included Max Winneg at #2 Singles, whose baseline game was quite sharp.  Winneg hit with confidence, committed very few errors, and won 6-1.  Adam Ewing notched a 6-3 advantage at #4 Singles, bearing down in mid-match after his spunky opponent converted a pair of service breaks to close an early three-game deficit.  Ewing eventually capitalized on stronger groundstrokes to earn his victory.  The third result on Fenn’s side of the ledger came at #2 Doubles, where Ethan Mullen and Charlie Groome bolted to a 6-0 score.  Though their opponents served with considerable pace, Mullen retrieved effectively from the baseline and Groome put away a number of sharp volleys and overheads at the net.  Miles Berry and Wes Kleiman were in the hunt at #1 and #3 Singles, respectively, conceding closely competitive matches that were decided by narrow margins after 45 minutes of play.

Fenn’s JV tennis team has posted a 3-2-3 record this season.
