Varsity Hockey

As the closing whistle is about to sound on the winter sports season, the varsity hockey team traveled to Rivers School on Feb.19. Nico Carere kept Rivers at bay until Fenn got on the scoreboard in the second period. Peter Nelson scored on a breakaway for a 1-0 Fenn lead early in the middle stanza. Charlie Desmarais tacked on two goals for Fenn, while Nico Bowden and Harrison Hill each contributed single tallies in the 5-2 Fenn win. Ian Moore and Nico Martinez picked up key assists on the afternoon.

“It was our most complete game of the season,” said Coach Derek Boonisar. “We played with confidence, took away their time and space, and converted offensively.” Fenn varsity is riding momentum heading in this final week of action, despite an 8-0 loss to Fessenden on Feb. 24. The team has won three of five games and has shown flashes of strong, confident play during a tough season. Fenn hosts Dexter on Feb. 26 in the season finale.

JV Hockey

The JV hockey team suffered a 6-1 loss on Feb. 17 at Pike School and fell again on February 18 to Park School in a 3-0 shutout. “Kudos to both Park and Pike for the skill and sportsmanship they displayed,” said Coach Jason Rude. “Both of those teams are varsity teams for their schools and we are mainly a middle school team, with the majority of our players being 6thgraders.” Despite the back-to-back losses, Coach Rude witnessed some bright spots with his team.

“This year we have had the luxury of good goaltending by our two sixth grade goalies, Tyler Bowden and Joe Doherty,” he said. JV lost to Pike School 7-1 on Feb. 24. The JV team closes the door on the season Feb. 25 with a home game against Rectory.

Varsity Basketball

Despite carrying a two-point lead into halftime, the varsity basketball team dropped a 56-47 game on February 17 to visiting Worcester Academy. Max Byron led Fenn with 15 points, while Lucas Lisman had 13. Coach Peter Bradley’s team carries an 8-4 record into the final game of the season on February 26 at Lawrence Academy.

JV Basketball

The JV basketball team dropped a pair of games this week. Fenn suffered a 50-44 home loss to Buckingham Browne & Nichols on Feb. 19. Looking to rebound on February 24, Fenn competed until the final buzzer but wound up on the short end of a 39-37 score at Belmont Day School. Coach Freemon Romero’s team will host Fessenden in the final game of the season on Feb. 26.

Thirds Basketball

The Thirds Gold team trekked to Pike School on Feb. 17 and picked up a 30-18 victory. Trying to keep its unbeaten streak alive, Coach Tony Santos’ team then traveled to Park School on February 19. In the lowest scoring game of the season, Fenn beat Park, 15-12. Fenn held a 9-5 halftime lead in this defensive struggle. Nick Bettenhauser collected a game-high six points, yet this was a total team effort.

“Gray Hussey and Matt Sanders did a great job of defending Park’s shooters,” said Coach Tony Santos. “And Jackson Morgan had a big basket just before the half, while Duncan MacKenzie made an important hoop in the second half. “ Fenn’s Thirds Gold team has an unblemished 9-0-1 record. The team will host Jewish Community Day School on February 25 in the last game of the season.

Wrestling

Fenn’s varsity wrestling team closes the books on another fine season when it competes in the Fessenden Tournament, which will take place Sat., Feb. 27, in Newton.
