VARSITY SOCCER
Riding the wave of a season-long shutout and undefeated streak, Fenn varsity hosted Rectory on October 19. The boys in blue-and-gold secured a 3-0 shutout to stretch the undefeated streak to eight games.

At Shore Country Day School on Friday, Fenn got two goals from Alex Brown. Alex Requadt also connected to give Fenn a 3-0 lead at the half. Fenn held off Shore in the second half and added one more for a 4-0 victory.

Up against tough archrival Fessenden School on October 26, Fenn’s tremendous nine game-win-streak with no goals allowed came to a screeching halt. Fenn surrendered two goals to Fessenden and settled for a 2-2 tie.

Next up: Fenn varsity (9-0-1) vs. Fay School on October 28

JV SOCCER
Handsome passing sequences and a brisk tempo propelled Fenn’s JV Soccer squad to a well-controlled 4-0 victory over Lexington Christian Academy on October 20 in Concord. The Lions fielded a sporting, well-trained side, and their goalkeeper played an exceptionally strong match, but Fenn’s increasingly quick, reliable ball movement created attacking opportunities constantly, and the difference in possession time was decisive.

Ben LaPlante stuffed in the first goal after dribbling through four LCA defenders in succession. His run started on the left flank, where despite firm defensive pressure, he settled a quick throw-in from Matt Nicholas. LaPlante beat his marker along the touchline, turned the corner on a second back in the corner of the penalty area, and deked two more inside the box to earn shooting space just three or four yards from the goal. He did not miss.

Well-played headers on restarts led to two more first-half strikes for Fenn. Billy McCullen charged from the left edge of the box to meet a free kick from Harry Bertos on the right flank at 13 minutes, and he lifted the high first bounce neatly above the goalie’s reach. Ten minutes later, Jesse Fernandez lobbed a long corner kick to Luke First underneath the 18-yard line. First approached aggressively and nodded down the serve to Ethan Mullen, who confidently half-volleyed to the upper-right corner of the goal.

Fenn’s defensive trio of sweeper Izak Murphy and outside backs Calvin Martindale and Ethan Beagle turned aside a number of well-conceived advances from LCA’s skilled strikers and center midfielder. Murphy patrolled with speed and power, while Martindale and Beagle marked closely and contained ball carriers effectively all afternoon, leaving goalkeeper Nico Martinez with little more than smart positioning and calm pickups on his assignment sheet.

Fernandez nailed the fourth goal with a fine free kick from the left touchline midway through the second half. His 30-yard bomb was laser-accurate, caroming against the right post, just a few inches under the crossbar, and into the goal.

THIRDS SOCCER
It is what any coach likes to see: a team improving game by game. Fenn’s Gold team is getting better every step of the season. After starting the year with two straight losses, Fenn halted the skid with a 2-2 tie on October 14, and now has reversed the trend by stringing together two straight victories. On October 20 at Carroll School in Lincoln, Fenn spotted the home team a 2-0 advantage, but would not say quit. Charlie Groome played the hero role, scoring a hat-trick to lift Fenn by Carroll, 3-2. With no time to rest, Fenn suited up at Shore Country Day School on October 21. The team recruited two 7th graders, Max Koehler and Noah Lippa, who both strengthened the Gold team. Fenn also had the help of a few players from the JV team, Jacob Choi, Billy McCullen, and Ethan Mullen. Fenn walked away with a 2-1 win, with Alex Natalizio notching his first goal of the season.

Fenn’s Blue team had a shutout week. The Blue team played to a scoreless draw at Concord Academy on October 21 and then raced by Fay School in Southborough in a 4-0 shutout on October 26. The win over Fay was the Blue team’s first win of the season.

Next up: Gold (2-2-1) vs Belmont Day on October 27
Blue (1-2-2) @ Fessenden School on October 28

FOOTBALL
Fenn’s football team ran into a bigger, stronger, faster Fessenden School team on October 21 in Newton. Fenn finished on the short end of a 36-8 score. On a rare Wednesday afternoon game, Fenn travelled to Thayer Academy on October 26 to try to get back on track. Fenn and Thayer were equally competitive throughout the contest, keeping it close all the way. Seventh grader Eddie Jelin scored two touchdowns for Fenn, as the two teams played to a 22-22 draw. Fenn’s Eoin Morrissey was a standout on defense, with a few pass break ups and good tackles.
Next up: Fenn football (1-3-1) @ Fay School on November 4

CROSS-COUNTRY
With classic Fall temperatures and a rainbow sprawling the sky, Fenn hosted seven area schools in a meet on October 21 on Monument Street. A total of 86 runners competed in the big event. On the boys course, Fenn (55) came in third place, just behind St. Sebastian School (54) and Hillside School (34). Lexington Christian Academy (93), Shady Hill (153), and Milton Academy (154) followed. In the girls event, Nashoba Brooks (32) took top honors over Shady Hill (60), Milton Academy (77), and Lexington Christian Academy (78).
