FENN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 16, 2017

VARSITY HOCKEY

The Fenn School’s varsity hockey team skated to its third straight victory on February 10 when Rectory School came to town. Henry Peters connected on the power play in the opening period to put Fenn out front, 1-0.  Peter Nelson scored on his own rebound to give Fenn a 2-0 advantage in the second period.  In the third, Ian Moore scored on a laser shot from the right point, capping off the scoring.  Ben Ferrell, Nico Bowden, and Nate Crozier each grabbed a period of action between the pipes and each played well, as Fenn defeated Rectory School, 3-1.

“Andrew Pesce, Brendan Peters, and Peter Scheibe played well up front,” said coach Derek Boonisar.  “And Nico Bowden, Alex Brown, and Eoin Morrissey held down the fort on defense.”

The three-game win streak came to a halt on February 15.  Fenn visited Roxbury Latin School in Boston, playing in the new state-of-the-art athletic center on the sparkling ice rink. Fenn surrendered a goal in each period plus an empty-netter, as the team faced a barrage of shots on goal from the fast and physical Roxbury Latin team.  Meanwhile, Fenn could not generate any offense of its own, despite battling hard to keep the score close.

“Tyler Bowden made some outstanding saves to start the second period and keep Fenn within two goals,” said coach Jeff LaPlante.  “Defensemen Ian Moore, Eoin Morrissey, and Alexander Brown also contributed significantly to keep the scoring down.”

Fenn is 6-3-1 on the season with two games remaining.

Injuries and illness have played havoc with the JV hockey roster.  Down several key players, Fenn dropped a tough 8-4 loss on February 10 to visiting Carroll School.

Fenn is 1-3 on the season with two games remaining on the schedule.

Fenn is 8-4 on the season with two games remaining.

Fenn’s JV team got back on the winning track on February 15.  Hosting Pike School, Fenn scored a convincing 36-23 victory.

THIRDS BASKETBALL

There was added incentive heading into Fenn’s game at Fessenden School in Newton on February 15.  Coach Tony Santos, who has been a Squad coach for 32 years, was seeking a milestone: his 200th victory.

Additional motivation came with the fact that both the Gold and Blue teams had lost to Fessy earlier this season.  So this time around, Fenn combined the Thirds Gold and Blue squads to go up against the big and tough Fessenden team.

“The boys came ready to play,” said coach Santos.  “Between a tough man-to-man defense and a half court trap, we kept pace with them.”

Sam Remondi scored 11 points, while Graham Wesel and Hans Toulmin each contributed four points for Fenn.  Jacob Chui hit an important three-pointer when the game was close in the first half, giving his team a surge of momentum.  The score was knotted at 18-18 in the second half, but Fenn stepped up its play and recorded a 26-23 victory over Fessenden.  Congratulations to coach Santos on his 200th victory!

The Fenn Thirds Gold team defeated visiting Park School, 28-17, on February 10.  Jacob Chui and Brad Kelly each pumped in ten points for Fenn. Duncan MacKenzie played a strong game, fighting hard under the basket and getting offensive and defensive rebounds.

Fenn Gold is 5-2 this season, having won four consecutive games.
